Things Rich People Spend Money On That Make Them Look Incompetent

A few years ago, I was invited to a party at a waterfront estate in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with a bunch of my friends. On the inside, there were two elevators, 20,000 square feet of space, and an elegant living room.

One of my friends asked, “Doesn’t this make you wonder what you did wrong?” as we gazed in awe of a new aspect of existence. Because, you know, why don’t we have houses like this?

“Really?” was my retort. The time it would take to travel from the garage to the master bedroom was merely in my head when I left my keys there.”

I’ve been to a slew of mansion parties after that initial one. Along with cruising on mega-yachts and kicking back in massive home theatres, I’ve also reaped the benefits of others’ success.

I’ve come to realise that it’s a lot of fun to be friends with wealthy folks.

However, I’ve come to realise that making a big show of impressing others with ostentatious displays often backfires. In other words, something you think will make others envious may actually make them laugh at your expense.

Here are a few examples of my favourites:

A High-Priced Sports Vehicle

No, I’d rather see how quick it can go.

All three times I’ve been a passenger in a Ferrari, that’s the question I’ve been asked to answer. “Please, no.” My response was always the same. “I beg of you,” I beg.

The appeal is a sham. An urban street can go from 0 to 100 in less than five seconds.

In my opinion, it’s not a bad idea for individuals to get behind the wheel of an automobile that can theoretically travel at speeds of more than 200 mph. They don’t include me.

No matter how much they think they’re being admired at every traffic light, are they actually getting the respect they paid for?

Sure, they’re getting some attention, but it’s not the type they were hoping to receive. Ferraris make me think of someone who’s in the middle of a midlife crisis and has a lot of money.

A Vessel Of Any Kind

Within a 5-mile radius of Fort Lauderdale’s Intracoastal Waterway, there are more than $100 million worth of virtually underused vessels.

If boating is illegal, then I am guilty. My small waterfront property has two 30-foot boats tied behind it as I type this. Boating is one of my favourite pastimes, and repairing my own vessels is another.

Although owning one, especially a large, complicated model, does have the advantage of making any other indulgences you have feel almost free. When the mood strikes, I’d rather pay $1,000 to charter a boat for the day rather than own one for the long haul.

What should I say when someone asks me, “Which boat should I buy?” That which belongs to someone else, as I put it.

Boat ownership can only be made worse by taking out a loan or purchasing a new boat. When you drive an automobile off the lot, don’t you think it depreciates? Poultry food. It’s simply mind-boggling how quickly boats depreciate in value.

Also, they tend to be left unattended for lengthy periods of time, which is the worst way to maintain one.

Investing in a fleet of boats is a losing strategy. Also, unless you’re flush with cash, this hobby may not elevate you to the social strata you expect.

A Surgical Procedure To Alter One’s Appearance

You believe it has the effect of making you look younger. You might resemble someone who is so self-conscious about their appearance that they underwent plastic surgery to make it appear as if they were not ageing. Do not even get me started on the (literally) over-the-top variety of breast augmentation.

Adornment With Precious Stones

A little jewellery may go a long way in making a person look more put together. You might as well just wear a dress made of $1,000 bills if you’re wearing too much. I don’t think it’s sophisticated at all. There’s a thin line separating good taste from ostentation.

A House Is A House

It’s understandable that if you have a fortune to invest, your home is the best option.

You’re not looking affluent, you’re looking crazy if you’re taking out huge loans to buy a property that’s considerably bigger than you need or can afford to impress your pals.

What dog owner desires a ten-minute stroll to allow their dog in?

Employees

If you can afford it, it’s fine to hire a maid service. However, what about those who are residing with you?

Affluence may allow me to adjust to living with individuals I don’t know very well. However, I’ve known people who have live-in drivers, butlers, cooks, and other “personal aides,” and I’ve always felt uncomfortable while they were present.

When I was a kid, I often wondered if rich people had to get dressed if they wanted to raid the fridge at night.

Unlike an office building, it’s a home. If it’s so large that it necessitates a large staff, then perhaps it’s too much.

What You’re Wearing?

If clothes do make the man, then expensive clothing might make the man look like he is attempting too hard to look good in his attire. There’s a small line between tasteful and tasteless, just like there is with jewellery.

A stockbroker I worked with for 10 years discovered that a person’s genuine worth was inversely proportional to his or her outward wealth. That is to say, the wealthy are represented by a nice suit and a Porsche, whereas the middle-class are represented by the guy in jeans and a station waggon.

Consumption In Public

Material things and other conspicuous consumption may not only make you appear wealthy, but also make you appear shallow.

Is there a bumper sticker that reads, “He who dies with the most toys won?” There were never any words that sounded more dreary.

However, if you’ve got it, it’s not a crime to show it off.

When it comes to the products I’ve listed above, you’ll likely find my critique inaccurate or even insulting if you’ve purchased them. That’s not what I’m trying to do.

Having money is a nice thing, and blowing it is even better. There are two kinds of people: those that are self-centered and those that are selfless and self-reliant. It doesn’t matter how much money you spend or on what. What matters is why you’re spending the money in the first place.

There is no amount of money or goods that can affect how you feel about yourself. Spending to enhance your ego is what makes you appear foolish.

But if you like yourself and spend money to pursue a hobby or spice up your daily routine, then go ahead and enjoy yourself. I’d like to spend time with someone like you.

Even if your Ferrari is as fast as you say it is, I will not be watching.
