In order to find the best insurance company in the United States, we conducted a survey on customer service, claims handling, and customer loyalty. It also identifies the insurers that their policyholders are most likely to renew with and recommend.

Car Insurance Providers ranked among the best

USAA

We found USAA to be the best car insurance provider. Customer satisfaction with USAA’s customer service was rated highly in our survey. They also appreciate how simple it is to file a claim with the company and how frequently they are given updates on the status of their claims.

Because of this company’s limited availability, the only drawback we could identify is a negative one. Only veterans, active military personnel, and their dependents are eligible for USAA’s services. As a result, a large number of potential customers will be turned away by USAA because of their health.

State Farm Insurance

It’s easy for customers to file a claim with state farm according to the majority of survey respondents who intend to renew their policy. No military affiliation is required to get a great deal on car insurance from State Farm.

Asked if customers were satisfied with the company’s status updates during the claims process, State Farm received slightly lower marks. The majority of people who have insurance with State Farm say that they got a good deal on their policy.

Geico

In our list of the best car insurance companies, Geico comes in third place. Customers who have used Geico to file a claim say that the company makes the process simple. According to the majority of those who responded to the survey, they also intend to renew their coverage and are likely to spread the word about Geico to others. However, despite its low rates and excellent customer service, Geico ranked lower than some of its competitors in terms of value.

Nationwide

Overall, Nationwide is a solid performer, but it doesn’t stand out as particularly superior to the competition in any one area. Due to a few drawbacks, we can’t place Nationwide among the top three car insurance providers. Nationwide’s claim status updates and resolution were cited as sources of dissatisfaction by a number of survey participants.

Farmers

We’ve ranked farmers at the middle of the pack. Our survey participants were generally pleased with the claims process, customer service, and overall value provided by this insurer. However, when we asked if drivers would recommend Farmers to their friends or family, the company’s overall satisfaction rating dropped a bit.

American Family

Americans are the least satisfied with how their claims were handled by American Family Insurance. Despite this, customers remain loyal to American Family. The number of customers who said they planned to renew their policies put this company near the top of the list. Those who have purchased insurance from American Family may also pass that information along to others in their social circles.

Progressive

Even though Progressive’s cheerful pitchwoman Flo is the company’s most popular commercial star, Progressive is only ranked seventh on our list of insurance companies. Customer service and the ease of filing a claim are two of this insurer’s strongest suits. These are areas in which Progressive is still lagging behind its rivals, however. Customers of Progressive are more likely than those of any other company to not renew their contracts, despite the fact that many of their competitors receive higher satisfaction ratings for the value they provide.

Travelers

Travelers customers were not as satisfied as you might expect from a low-ranking insurance company, as measured by our survey.

A majority of drivers who file a claim with Travelers are dissatisfied with how Travelers handles the situation, and they don’t believe the company provides a good value. Even though people gave Travelers a good rating when asked if they would recommend it to friends and family, they gave it a poor rating when asked if they would renew their policies.

Allstate

Most people who had filed a claim with Allstate were pleased with the simplicity of the process, but they were dissatisfied with the overall experience in most other ways. In our rankings, Allstate has the lowest perceived value because of its higher rates than those of the other companies. Allstate customers, on the other hand, are less likely to renew their policies than those of other insurance companies.

Although USAA membership is open to all policyholders, not everyone will meet the eligibility requirements. This is why we’ve identified the second-best option in each category so that all customers can learn about it.

We asked policyholders to rate their insurance company experiences on a five-point scale and explain why they chose that rating level. People who had opened a policy in the previous five years and those who had filed a claim were separated from the rest of the respondents. After filing a claim, the second group was asked additional questions about their satisfaction with the process and the handling of the claim.

More than two-thirds of survey participants who had filed a claim with Nationwide were satisfied with the ease of claims filing, and more than two-thirds were satisfied with claim status updates.

Most Loyal to Its Customers: State Farm

The answers to a variety of questions are used to determine customer loyalty in our survey scoring methodology. After USAA, State Farm has the best customer loyalty of the companies in our rankings, with consistently high customer satisfaction scores and positive feedback. State Farm received high marks for its competitive rates and friendly customer service, according to the people who took the survey.

Finding the Best Car Insurance Companies and Collecting Our Rates: Our Methodology

Over the last five years, we polled 4,806 customers who had filed an insurance claim and asked them about their experience with their current insurance provider. There was a focus on how easy it was to file a claims; customer service; claims status communication; claims resolution; and overall cost. As part of our survey, we also asked if they would recommend the company and if they were planning on renewing their policy. Our Best Car Insurance Companies rankings were based on their feedback.

While not all of the largest national car insurance companies operate in all 50 states, U.S. News worked with Quadrant Information Services to analyse a report on insurance rates in each state to obtain comparative insurance rates for this study. According to Quadrant, car insurers submit publicly available rate data to regulators. Drivers in the 25-35-and-60-year-old age brackets were used to calculate our study rates. Each vehicle has an annual mileage that ranges from 6,000 to 12,000, with a variety of makes and models in use. As with credit scores, there were three tiers: good, fair, and poor. Records with no accidents or speeding violations were also taken into account when determining certain driver archetypes.
